LIST OF WORKS
The proposal by artist SofĂa Maldonado Suárez, “La Ninfaaa, mi cuento,” is a Digital Art, NFT and Physical art project that views the landscape through the eyes of her avatar. La Ninfaaa, a mythical character, narrates her story of spiritual growth post-pandemic. It’s a journey of bodies of water, emotional healing, changing currents, and contemplation of the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. The project emphasizes deepening our understanding of ancestral wounds by interacting with life lessons, imagined narratives, and immersing ourselves in the poetic experience of dancing with our shadow to let our inner light shine.
During her stay in Madrid, where she lived for two years (2021-2022), she traveled to Valencia, Ibiza, Formentera, and La Gomera, yearning for her connection to bodies of water (natural springs and the sea). La Ninfaaa, drawn to stories of pirates, realized she could only survive close to the sea. Her deep connection with the ocean revived her ancestral wound, memories of her Cuban heritage, and her strong bond with the sea.
Upon her return, she set up her studio in Yabucoa, a coastal farming town in the archipelago of Boriken, which serves as the creative base for the narrative of this exhibition. The project consists of a series of eight digital prints on canvas (24 in. x 34 in.), intervened with acrylic paint and glitter. These images draw from experiences between 2020 and 2023, along with poetic reflections from La Ninfaaa’s imagination. The proposal also includes a selection of ceramics and organic materials collected from the coasts of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. The project is supported by Finca Caribe, an agroecological farm, where the ceramic pieces were created and fired in a bonfire, using clay sourced from the surrounding mountains. Additionally, a video documenting La Ninfaaa’s narrative, edited by Gio Maldonado and directed by SofĂa Maldonado Suárez, accompanies the exhibition. There is also a limited-edition graphic novel that delves deeper into the narrative of the canvas works through text.
